  • TULSA Procedure

An incision-free procedure that uses directional ultrasound from within the prostate and real-time temperature control to precisely ablate targeted prostate tissue.

What is the TULSA Procedure?

The TULSA Procedure is a radiation-free, incision-free, same-day procedure. The treatment is customizable depending on the patients’ needs, condition and desired functional outcomes. Precise treatment planning and active urethral and rectal cooling during the procedure enables the physician to avoid and protect critical structures around the prostate, such as fragile nerve bundles, and minimize the risk of side effects

About the TULSA Procedure

The word ‘TULSA’ stands for Transurethral Ultrasound Ablation. The procedure is performed in a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) suite and uses the TULSA-PRO® system to  precisely ablate targeted prostate tissue. The physician can see the prostate at all times throughout the procedure. The procedure combines real-time MRI with robotically-driven and temperature-controlled directional thermal ultrasound to deliver predictable, physician-prescribed ablation customized to the entire or only specific areas of the prostate gland.

TULSA Procedure Benefits

The TULSA-PRO® system is FDA cleared, has more than 20 clinical publications with up to 5-year outcomes. This procedure is incision-free and is performed as an outpatient procedure. Some of the many benefits include a low complication rate and a rapid recovery time.

  •

Low Rate and Severity of Side Effects

The TULSA Procedure has a low risk of everyday functional decline because your physician has the ability to avoid important nerve bundles and structures around your prostate, decreasing the risk of side effects.

  •

    Same Day Outpatient Procedure

The TULSA Procedure is a one-and-done procedure, performed in a single session that takes a few hours. There is no need for repeat visits, meaning you can take less time off work, spend less time in the hospital, and spend more time living.

  •

    Keep your Options Open

If you are in need of future prostate care, you may either have a repeat TULSA Procedure, or choose any other type of prostate therapy to address your prostate needs.

  •

    Rapid Recovery Time

Most patients return to activities quickly and their erectile and urinary functions return to baseline in about 3 months

  •

    Customizable Treatment Plan

The TULSA Procedure is a customizable procedure that is personalized based on your unique anatomy, condition and prostate tissue.

Using high-precision MR imaging, the physician can clearly see the prostate in the coronal, sagittal and axial view.

The physician uses MR imaging to monitor the tissue heating within and surrounding the prostate, in real-time. The physician can make adjustments to the plan if necessary, enabling the procedure to be very controlled and predictable.

Figure 1: In this hemi ablation, the physician can see the areas of the prostate being ablated in the a) axial view, b) side view, and c) coronal view.

  •

    Precise targeted ablation

The TULSA Procedure is precise which allows for local control of clinically significant disease, with significant PSA reduction and low rates of residual cancer on follow-up biopsy.
